The Glasgow University Astronomy Society is focused on making Astronomy and Astrophysics accessible to everyone. From our beer and donuts night (complete with quiz), to our guest lectures and observation nights, we are here to bring all the astronomy not covered in normal time to the university.

The Committee

We all have our love of Astronomy and socialising to unite us, however in this organised chaos we need a select few to make sure that even the unexpected runs smoothly and efficiently. And they are...

President: Paul Walker

Paul Walker

The boy who kayaks down rivers in a jet-ski is back once again, and after holding just about every other office in the society, he is using his now polished organisational skills to run the committee. His choice in music may be a few hundred years out of fashion, but with his experience, and his uncanny love for science fiction, relativity and quantum mechanics, how long can it be until AstroSoc develops its very own transporter?

Secretary: Martin Black

Martin Black

After narrowly missing out on the Presidency, Martin is already plotting his revenge. This may involve an eternity locked in Black's Hole (a euphamism for the Student Library), an unexpected exit from the sixth floor, or simply the look of death. Either way, Martin is not the kind of Secretary to be found in a miniskirt....unless Steven's in the area.

Treasurer: Peter Childs

Peter Childs

Advancing up through the ranks from Events Coordinator to Treasurer, we are looking forward to seeing some more of the ever entertaining Pete this year. With our money in his hands, the booze bill may be a fair sight higher this year if his profile picture says anything.

Publicity Convenor: Steven McGinty

Steven McGinty

As one of the biggest Star Trek fans in our group, Steven is well aware of the rule "Greed is Eternal." Despite this little fact, he's decided to sit on the committees for both the Physical Society and the Astronomy Society, and plans to run for President of at least one of them next year. Combined with his new found love of telescopes, is it any wonder that he never finds the time to sleep?

Librarian: Stacey Connan

Stacey Connan

Determined to prove that your hobby can also be your job, Stacey is planning a career in Stellar Astrophysics. She may have little or no love for the moon, but as you move outward from the Earth to the areas of the universe where our Sun is just another glittering star in the heavens above, her love of Astronomy grows exponentially.

Events Coordinator: Chris Walsh

Chris Walsh

A refugee fleeing from organised Astronomy, Chris has joined our board to try and rekindle his affection for the stars and the universe. We may, however, have put ourselves in a tricky position by placing him as Events Coordinator - three cars in two years show that Jennifer (fate and the universe as a whole) hate him, almost as much as he hates them. Watch this space, and see if three can change to four....

Staff Representative: Dr Martin Hendry

Martin Hendry

Renowned for his love of Lego Star Wars, Martin has been the AstroSoc Staff Representative for the last few years. Always a friendly face, it's no wonder that this cosmologist from East Kilbride is still the Head of First Year. If you're interested, you could always ask him about his favourite talk: "Did We Really Land on the Moon?"
